Types of single cup coffee makers

Posted by admin on April 22, 2009 in Single cup coffee maker |

Ok, you’ve decided to buy a singe cup coffee maker. There are a lot of types on the market and it is easy to get lost among them.
There are three types of single cup coffee makers on the market at the moment:

Tassimo-Maschine von BraunImage via Wikipedia

Tassimo Brewers – these single serve brewers are the most expensive ones.  They take so called  T-Discs to make a coffee. There are two T-Disc brewer companies on the market: the Braun Tassimo and the Bosch Tassimo. 18 T-Disks cost about 19$ on Amazon so 1 cup of coffee will cost you more than 1 dollar.
K-Cup Brewers – these single serve brewers take K-Cups. They are cheaper than Tassimo Brewers. You can find 28 K-Cups on Amazon for 21 dollar. So one cup will cost you about 80 c.
Coffee Pod Brewers – take coffee pods. It is the cheapest solution for the house.  There are a lot of different coffee pod brewers on the market for affordable price.

6 tips to make a best tasting coffee

Posted by admin on April 15, 2009 in Coffee |

I’ve come across the article on lifehacker.com called “Brew the Best Possible Coffee Without Breaking the Bank”. The instructions given there are simple and well known for coffee lovers but for those who just start to drink coffee it may be interesting to read.

Jason Fitzpatrick – the author if the article gives the following advices:

Caffeine up closeImage by eyeore2710

Find the right type of coffee beans
Almost all coffee in the world comes from two types of coffee plants: Arabica and Robusta. Arabica has less caffeine and a more mellow taste. Robusta has more caffeine and higher acidic content which creates a significantly more bitter flavor. So read the label before purchasing the coffee.

Buy whole coffee beans
The oils and chemical compounds that give coffee its distinct flavoring are in constant flight from the bean. Keeping the beans intact for as long as possible helps a lot to preserve their taste. You may want to buy locally roasted beans to benefit from the freshness. Barring that, buying whole bean coffee is vastly superior to buying pre-ground coffee.

Grind your own coffee
You can buy a basic blade grinder at any kitchen store or big box grocer. It costs less than $15 and looks a lot like a tall and narrow food processor. It has got a flat blade at the bottom of the chamber you put your coffee for grinding up the beans. Grind the coffee as closely to the time it will be used as possible, ideally right before you use it.

Store coffee in the right container
Don’t put it the refrigerator. It is the mortal enemy of your coffee.  Store it in an air tight, opaque, and glass or otherwise inert container. If you don’t want to use coffee beans immediately and want to save it for near-future then you can store it in the freezer assuming it is placed in a dry and air tight container.

Use French Press
One of the best methods of brewing coffee is the cheapest. You can pick up a French Press just about everywhere. Using a French press is one of the simplest methods of brewing a fantastic cup of coffee. When you use French Press more of the coffee oils end up in your cup instead of in the machine’s filter. More oils means better taste! It is better to use French Press than singe cup coffee maker. Also a carefully cleaned French press can be used for loose leaf tea.

Use pure distilled water
This tip is also great for the tea lovers.  Pure distilled water gives a great taste!

Black & Decker’s Single Cup Coffee Maker

Posted by admin on April 8, 2009 in Single cup coffee maker |
coffee Waves

I’ve decided to post reviews from Amazon for the most famous single cup coffee makers so you’ll be able to compare them without clicking from page to page.

Let’s start from the Black & Decker‘s DCM18S Brew ‘n Go Personal Single Cup Coffee Maker. You can buy it on Amazon for just 22.27$.  It goes with FREE travel mug as well.

There are currently 545 reviews for this coffee maker on Amazon and the majority of buyers (299) gave 5 stars. 106 buyers gave 4 stars, 51 – 3 stars, 39 – 2 stars and 50 buyers gave 1 star. The average rating is 4 stars.

This single cup coffee maker has a lot of features, one of the reviewers (Scott Pointon) writes the following:

“1. It has a built in, “permanent” filter which is a HUGE plus. No more running out of filters, EVER.
2. It is fast. In just a couple minutes I can go from sleep to sipping coffee.
3. It brews the coffee right into the travel mug. The unit I bought included an extra mug which is also a great convenience.
4. It is inexpensive!”

This single cup coffee maker is rare – it’s hard to find it in the shops. And some reviewers so used to it that they’ve purchased the same model after 5 years of using the first one.

J Burgeson from Amazon.com:

“I’m on my second one — it lasts about four to five years in daily use. Not bad for the money.”

Please note: this single cup coffee maker is for people who drink 1 max 3 cups of coffee per day. Don’t buy it if you drink more.
As another reviewer says:

This product is great for people on the go, for people who only drink a cup of coffee a day, and for people who don’t like to spend an eternity cleaning up!”

Is can also be used for making tea, coffee and Thera-flu.

The minus may be a plastic mug that comes together with this coffee maker. Some people don’t like it as it may add a plastic taste to the coffee. Here is one review from Marilee:

“Before brewing my first cup of coffee, I washed all components, and ran hot water through a brew cycle. Before throwing out the water from the mug, I noticed an unpleasant hot plastic odour. Assuming it was from manufacturing, I repeated the hot water brewing cycle. The smell persisted. Another repeat. Then I ran the mug through the dishwasher. Finally, I made coffee. It brewed fast, the strength was good, but that plasticness overwhelmed the coffee. It should be noted that while the included mug may have the look of aluminium, the interior is black plastic. I was happy with the speed and convenience of the brewing, so I tried a ceramic mug which fit in the space under the drip basket. This gave me hot, decent tasting coffee, but obviously not “to go”. Luckily, I have an insulated all aluminium travel mug which just barely fits under the brewer, and by adjusting the amount of water and coffee I use, I’m now able to finally Brew and Go. This product is fine for quick single servings, as there is no hot plate to keep your beverage warm. There is simply no excuse for that mug.”

But another reviewer says that it doesn’t taste like rubber so I assume only sencitive people can taste it.

Also some reviewers wrote about overflow problems and coffe grounds in the mug and water container after brewing the coffee. The folowing review is written buy “Truro Potter “Paul”:

“The hot water is expressed very forcefully into the filter basket where the coffee grounds are. So much so that it scatters the grounds throughout the entire inside of the product — into the water reservoir and into the brewed coffee.”

Some people write that this single cup coffee maker has… a mind of its own!

“Once I plugged it in and then went to the tap to get the water, while I had my back to it, it turned itself on. That’s right it turned itself on.”

“Starts brewing as soon as water is poured in, WITHOUT TURNING THE SWITCH ON!”

As the conclusion read that MWA “sister321″ from New York wrote in her review:

“For 17 dollars, come on!!! That’s like one plain shirt in Old Navy.
I read tons of reviews before buying this. I liked it because its light, portable, cleans easily, cheap and environmentally friendly (not to mention economically).
There are some negative in Amazon because they follwed the guidelines in the paper. Here’s my precaustions to have a perfect cup:

1. Make sure you dont fill it all with water. Try making 3/4 cups, just to be in the safe side.

2. Use Starbucks ground coffee—it’ll make you feel glad you’re saving $4.

3. You can use another mug or coffee cup to suit your taste. I got a smiley face mug from the 99c store. Some reviews mentioned that the travel mug smells like rubber when they bought it. duh! that’s because its new. All you have to do is wash it with dishwashing liquid. If that’s too difficult, then dont buy the coffee maker.

All in all, Im satisfied with my purchase. This is my first coffee maker (I personally bought) and it sure is very cute and useful. Its super cheap–but the most important aspect of it—IT WORKS.

Dont expect like those heavy-weight and dramatic coffee makers. This belongs to a whole new genre. Definitely not your poshy restaurant/hotel coffee maker. Its just a simple plastic toy-like coffee maker that works.”

3 advices on choosing the right coffee cup maker.

Posted by admin on April 2, 2009 in Coffee Cup Maker |
Brown cup of coffee

A lot of us like to start our day with a cup of coffee before we leave the house. The warmth, the aroma and the taste of the coffee help us to prepare ourselves for a busy day. But the morning can be spoiled if you choose the wrong cup maker. In nowadays it is very easy to get lost among different sizes and dozens of bells & whistles. Let’s take a look at some of the important considerations when choosing a coffee cup maker.

First of all you have to consider the amount of coffee you drink each day. This is the most important consideration. If you drink just a cup of coffee then a small cup maker for 1 cup will meet your requirements. With the 1 cup coffee maker, you can not only get the possibility of an individual cup of coffee brewed in less than one minute, but also the chance of having the exact flavour/style of coffee that is preferred by different members of the household or workplace. The disadvantage with 1 cup makers is the greater expense per cup because the coffee used in single cup makers is packaged in individual serving containers. Unfortunately these containers cost more per cup than coffee made from larger, traditional- size packaging.

Secondly, you have to determine which features you would use and what construction you want. The majority of us just want a cup maker that will brew a simple cup of coffee. But that’s fine but is still worth looking on the features available. For example some single cup makers allow you to adjust the spout so that you can brew the coffee into a standard size or travel size mug. There is another useful feature: coffee makers allow you to brew regular coffee and pods.

Some coffee cup makers are more durable than others. Most coffee cup makers (especially those that are less expensive) are made from plastic and include a glass carafe.

A steel constructed models makes a better choice for those who want a more durable coffee cup maker. These coffee cup makers are sturdier, heavier, and more likely to last longer. A stainless steel body looks attractive and can add a nice look to your kitchen.  Some of these machines also include a stainless steel carafe.

If you want to buy a single coffee cup maker then it’s better to search for a model with a reusable filter. It can be difficult to find small filters for single cup coffee makers. That’s why it’s a good idea to invest in a model that has a reusable filter. You can just wash the filter and use it again.
