Black & Decker’s Single Cup Coffee Maker

I’ve decided to post reviews from Amazon for the most famous single cup coffee makers so you’ll be able to compare them without clicking from page to page.
Let’s start from the Black & Decker’s DCM18S Brew ‘n Go Personal Single Cup Coffee Maker. You can buy it on Amazon for just 22.27$. It goes with FREE travel mug as well.
There are currently 545 reviews for this coffee maker on Amazon and the majority of buyers (299) gave 5 stars. 106 buyers gave 4 stars, 51 - 3 stars, 39 - 2 stars and 50 buyers gave 1 star. The average rating is 4 stars.
This single cup coffee maker has a lot of features, one of the reviewers (Scott Pointon) writes the following:
“1. It has a built in, “permanent” filter which is a HUGE plus. No more running out of filters, EVER.
2. It is fast. In just a couple minutes I can go from sleep to sipping coffee.
3. It brews the coffee right into the travel mug. The unit I bought included an extra mug which is also a great convenience.
4. It is inexpensive!”
This single cup coffee maker is rare - it’s hard to find it in the shops. And some reviewers so used to it that they’ve purchased the same model after 5 years of using the first one.
J Burgeson from Amazon.com:
“I’m on my second one — it lasts about four to five years in daily use. Not bad for the money.”
Please note: this single cup coffee maker is for people who drink 1 max 3 cups of coffee per day. Don’t buy it if you drink more.
As another reviewer says:
“This product is great for people on the go, for people who only drink a cup of coffee a day, and for people who don’t like to spend an eternity cleaning up!”
Is can also be used for making tea, coffee and Thera-flu.
The minus may be a plastic mug that comes together with this coffee maker. Some people don’t like it as it may add a plastic taste to the coffee. Here is one review from Marilee:
“Before brewing my first cup of coffee, I washed all components, and ran hot water through a brew cycle. Before throwing out the water from the mug, I noticed an unpleasant hot plastic odour. Assuming it was from manufacturing, I repeated the hot water brewing cycle. The smell persisted. Another repeat. Then I ran the mug through the dishwasher. Finally, I made coffee. It brewed fast, the strength was good, but that plasticness overwhelmed the coffee. It should be noted that while the included mug may have the look of aluminium, the interior is black plastic. I was happy with the speed and convenience of the brewing, so I tried a ceramic mug which fit in the space under the drip basket. This gave me hot, decent tasting coffee, but obviously not “to go”. Luckily, I have an insulated all aluminium travel mug which just barely fits under the brewer, and by adjusting the amount of water and coffee I use, I’m now able to finally Brew and Go. This product is fine for quick single servings, as there is no hot plate to keep your beverage warm. There is simply no excuse for that mug.”
But another reviewer says that it doesn’t taste like rubber so I assume only sencitive people can taste it.
Also some reviewers wrote about overflow problems and coffe grounds in the mug and water container after brewing the coffee. The folowing review is written buy “Truro Potter “Paul”:
“The hot water is expressed very forcefully into the filter basket where the coffee grounds are. So much so that it scatters the grounds throughout the entire inside of the product — into the water reservoir and into the brewed coffee.”
Some people write that this single cup coffee maker has… a mind of its own!
“Once I plugged it in and then went to the tap to get the water, while I had my back to it, it turned itself on. That’s right it turned itself on.”
“Starts brewing as soon as water is poured in, WITHOUT TURNING THE SWITCH ON!”
As the conclusion read that MWA “sister321″ from New York wrote in her review:
“For 17 dollars, come on!!! That’s like one plain shirt in Old Navy.
I read tons of reviews before buying this. I liked it because its light, portable, cleans easily, cheap and environmentally friendly (not to mention economically).
There are some negative in Amazon because they follwed the guidelines in the paper. Here’s my precaustions to have a perfect cup:
1. Make sure you dont fill it all with water. Try making 3/4 cups, just to be in the safe side.
2. Use Starbucks ground coffee—it’ll make you feel glad you’re saving $4.
3. You can use another mug or coffee cup to suit your taste. I got a smiley face mug from the 99c store. Some reviews mentioned that the travel mug smells like rubber when they bought it. duh! that’s because its new. All you have to do is wash it with dishwashing liquid. If that’s too difficult, then dont buy the coffee maker.
All in all, Im satisfied with my purchase. This is my first coffee maker (I personally bought) and it sure is very cute and useful. Its super cheap–but the most important aspect of it—IT WORKS.
Dont expect like those heavy-weight and dramatic coffee makers. This belongs to a whole new genre. Definitely not your poshy restaurant/hotel coffee maker. Its just a simple plastic toy-like coffee maker that works.”
